Title: Kente Cloth Unit: Africa

Instructional Objectives: Students will paint lines and using shapes with even lines using tempera. Student will identify and create alternative patterns.

Materials and Equipment: Tempera paint with primary and secondary colors, medium sized brushes, pencil, eraser, black marker, paint palette, water cup, white multipurpose paper 6'x18'
General Vocabulary: Kente, column, row, loom and warp
Art Production:
-Show slide show of kente cloth which explains about royalty fabric and how kente is made.
-Explain to the students they will be making their own kente cloth design.
-Take the 6'x18' white paper and fold it in half hamburger style and fold it again the same way so there is four squares on the paper.
-In the first square, draw two shapes and five lines with pencil
-In the second square, draw two more shapes and five lines which are very different patterns in contrast to the first square.
-Create a pattern in the first and second square
-In the third square, repeat pattern from square one
-In the fourth square, repeat square two
-Go over lines with black marker
-Choose three to six colors of tempera pain to put onto the paint palette
-Paint each square with at least three colors of tempera paint
-Be sure to make squares one and three the same color scheme and squares two and four the same
color scheme.
